Potential Flow Model for an Impulsively Started Circular Cylinder

The initial phase of the flow field around an impulsively started circular cylinder is modelled by a pair of symmetric potential vortices in the wake. The rate of increase of the vorticity and of the separation angle are related to the unsteady laminar boundary layer adjacent to the cylinder. The resulting system of three ordinary differential equations with proper initial and matching conditions are solved numerically. The computed flow configuration and time history of drag are compared with available experiments.
