Diffusion bonding offers a means of fabricating hollow jet engine components such as disks and blades to provide weight reductions and internal cooling. Considerable emphasis has been placed on developing diffusion bonding technology for producing hollow titanium compressor blades. This paper summarizes the results of investigations aimed at establishing diffusion bonding parameters; i.e., time, temperature, and pressure for Ti-6Al-4V and determining the influence of surface preparation, postbond heat treatment and deformation control on bond quality and mechanical properties. Current results show that diffusion bonding of Ti-6Al-4V can produce joints having strength and ductility identical to parent metal.
