Longitudinal Impact of a Shaped Projectile on a Hopkinson Bar

Abstract

A computational method is developed to calculate numerically the normal force generated by the impact of a nonuniform linearly elastic projectile on a Hopkinson bar. One-dimensional relations are used. In order to assess the validity of the method, it is compared with an analytical solution in the case of the impact of a truncated cone on a rigid half-space. Then some practical applications are performed to predict the force generated by the impact of different truncated cones on a Hopkinson bar. We show that a perfect ramp load is only generated by the impact of a truncated cone on a rigid half-space.
