Wheel Rotations and Trailer Dynamics

Abstract

An evaluation is made of the usual assumption which neglects wheel rotations when obtaining equations of motion for simple vehicle dynamics problems. Using a simple example, a quantitative measure of this approximation is presented. The rotations of the wheels are shown to increase the effective inertia of the system, and thus could be of importance for low mass trailers. The change is easily calculated and can then be included or discarded at the discretion of the analyst.
