A Necessary Condition for the Nonoccurrence of von Mises Yielding in Impulsively Loaded Plates

For an elastically isotropic plate subject to an arbitrary impulsive load and boundary conditions which prevent rigid-body motion and do no work, it is shown that a necessary condition for the nonoccurrence of plastic yielding according to the von Mises criteria is that T(0) < 2/3 V(1 – ν)E−1 σ0 2 , where T(0) is the initial kinetic energy imparted by the impulse, V is the volume of the plate, ν is Poisson’s ratio, E is Young’s modulus, and σ0 is the yield stress of the plate material in a simple tension test.
